Care & maintenance

Our sculptures are made from of Stainless steel, mild steel, Core 10 steel, and recycle hard woods. Even though marine grade 316 stainless steel is used in most cases, your sculpture may weather outside due to all the pollutants and chemicals in our atmosphere. Here are a few tips on taking care of your fantastic sculptures.

What can you do?

Stainless steel

To prevent your sculpture from weathering we suggest spraying your sculpture with a silicone spray, every few months or when you think it's necessary. This will depend on where you live. If close to the sea, then more often.  CRC carries a great product called 808 which is available from most hardware stores. It was recommended to us by one of our customers who lives right next to the beach. Scroll up to see a photo of the product.

If you've noticed a few goldy coloured spots developing, try cleaning your sculpture with Grunt. It does a fantastic job. Just paint it on, leave it on for 24 hours and wash it off. However I don't think it's very good for the environment and it could bleach your clothes, and I suggest using gloves. I'm not too sure what it will do to your plants so I suggest you remove the the top part of your sculpture and wash it on concrete etc.

CLR which is available from PAK'nSAVE is another product you could try. It's good for removing finger marks on stainless steel, and it's  a very handy household product to have at home.

Core 10 and mild steel

Both of these metals are meant to rust and will age to a beautiful red rust colour outside. If you'd like to darken the colour or prevent the  colour from running in the rain, try coating the metal with boiled linseed oil. It's available from most hardware stores. Raw linseed oil takes a longer to dry so we suggest using boiled linseed oil.

Hardwood timber

Wood outside, tends to lighten in colour. To prevent this from happening, coat your wood as often as necessary with an exterior oil of your choice. We coated the wood on your sculpture with boiled linseed oil.

Bearings

We've used the best bearings available  and they shouldn't require maintenance. If you'd like any advice on care, please contact Russel on his mobile 022 0965698.

Instillation

Kinetic sculptures

Your sculptures need to be securely installed. I've given instructions below on how best to do this.

If there are severe weather warnings or you're going on holiday and are concerned about your kinetic sculpture, then take the top part inside. Just unscrew the top leaf or bolt and slide off your layers. Easy as that.

Deck
If you're wanting to position your sculpture on your wooden deck then dolt it on with bolts of your choice.

Garden
Dig a hole 30 cm deep and +/- 70 cm square and fill it with concrete. Bolt your sculpture onto the set concrete. You can hide the concrete with grass, pebbles, bark chips or anything of your choice.

Static sculptures (non- moving)

Follow instructions as above, however you may choose to use a little less concrete.
